Signal Flags and Pennants
With the internet, radio and satellite communications, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and other Maritime Vessels still use the code of signal alphabet flags, numeral pennants and special flags for visual signaling. These signal flags are used to communicate while maintaining radio silence and with other Vessels or allied forces. Naval Signalmen transmit messages by hoisting a flag or a series of flags on a halyard.
